Gowda looked at his team gathered in the SIT room. ‘Where is Gopal?’ he asked.

‘Out chasing Gurunath’s accomplice,’ Gajendra said.

Gopal had been sent off to the Majestic bus stand after an elaborate charade. ‘It’s quite probable that Gurunath had an accomplice. I don’t see him doing anything on his own,’ Gajendra had said, giving his moustache a slight twirl at its tips.

Gopal had nodded, ‘Yes, sir, I got that impression too.’

‘Gopal, I think it’s time we looked for the accomplice.’

‘But where do we start, sir?’

‘Here is what you do: go to the Majestic bus stand or VRS Travels—that is the bus office—and get a list of passengers who travelled on both 28 and 29 November. We start there,’ Gajendra said. In his best avuncular tone, he added, ‘I’ll show you how we draw out a list of possible suspects once you bring me the full passenger list.’

Byrappa, watching the goings-on, grinned in admiration. Gajendra wasn’t happy though. It was wasting manpower but maybe Gopal would find something, he hoped.
